Breathe : An Urban Lung Proposal
Concept:
The Breathe: Urban Lung Project aims to transform a neglected urban space in Johor into a vibrant green oasis. The vision is to create an urban jungle within the concrete landscape, serving as a transit stop where people can pause, rest, and engage in various activities. This space seeks to unite different communities by addressing common issues and fostering a stronger collective identity within the site.
Issues:-
Environmental: The site suffers from a lack of green spaces, leading to a scarcity of resting areas for pedestrians and visitors. This absence results in the site being overlooked, as people seek shelter from the harsh urban environment.
Social: The area lacks spaces for local communities to conduct activities such as urban farming, eco-literacy workshops, and leisure events. This limits their ability to contribute to the community effectively.-
Educational: There is a noticeable lack of eco-literacy, which diminishes green initiatives and public understanding of the importance of environmental stewardship.
Architecture Analysis :
The site’s alignment with a central alleyway creates a natural axis, enhancing visual and physical accessibility. The building is designed to capture and circulate wind from the north and northeast, utilizing a porous structure. Main elevations facing quiet alleyways aim to revitalize these lost spaces, improving visual connections and reclaiming the site's identity. The continuity of the five-foot walkway provides shade and familiarity, addressing the tropical climate's challenges
Proposal:The project centers around three main programs—educational, recreational, and commercial—supported by charity and art/culture initiatives.
Educational: Programs include eco-literacy workshops, informal education for children, and public forums on green activities. Practical spaces for urban farming, composting, recycling, and gardening are integral to the hands-on learning experience.
Recreational: Spaces cater to physical and mental well-being, including a yoga/pilates studio, therapy rooms, and therapeutic gardens. These areas provide a safe and calming environment, aligning with community goals of supporting those in need.
Commercial: Revenue generation is supported by selling produce from the urban farm, a café using in-house ingredients, and affordable vendor spaces for local entrepreneurs. These activities help fund the building’s operations and provide employment opportunities.
Charity: Services include a soup kitchen, health check-ups for the needy, and community workshops that upskill individuals and offer job opportunities, creating a sustainable cycle of support.
Seni Budaya (Art & Culture): The auditorium hosts screenings of local films and music shows, while foldable wall panels provide temporary exhibition space for local artists, promoting Malaysian culture.
